Ruben Almaguer currently serves as the Assistant Vice President for Disaster Management & Emergency Operations for Florida International University. In this position he is responsible for overseeing the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Previously, Mr. Almaguer served as Interim Director as well as Deputy Director for the State of Florida's Division of Emergency Management for three years. This position reported directly to the Executive Office of the Governor. Mr. Almaguer has also served as a Division Chief and Paramedic for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. He has responded to over 25 local, national and international disasters, including the earthquakes in Turkey, Taiwan, Columbia and Venezuela, floods in Africa, the Oklahoma City bombing, the 9/11 Pentagon attack. Mr. Almaguer received a Masters in Homeland Security and Defense from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Masters in Public Administration from Florida International University, and graduated from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government's Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program. He is currently a certified firefighter and licensed paramedic in the State of Florida, as well as a certified emergency manager.
